Re: Marine Radio and Sounder
As it's a tinnie I'd get a transom mount transducer and maybe something with side scanning ability, it could be handy in rivers. Radio I'd go for a vhf unit.

Re: Marine Radio and Sounder
I don't think a through hull transducer works to well with an aluminium boat an in hull will but you need to cut a hole and use a plastic bush to stop dissimilar metal corrosion if you use a bronze or ss one. As for choice of sounder it's all about how much you can afford. Shop around visit places like ch smith in Collingwood and look on line for the best price and use it negotiating. As for radio I have both in my boat vhf and 27 meg. If you fish with mates in other boats find out what they have no point buying a vhf if your mates are all on 27 meg. And don't forget you need a licence to use a vhf radio.

Re: Marine Radio and Sounder
On the radio....I would go VHF.....I dont even turn on the 27meg unit anymore as there are too many clowns on the radio. Someone may be able to correct me but I think I recall reading that the Coast Guard no longer monitor the emergency channel on the 27meg or will stop monitoring in the near future. For not a lot extra, you can get a radio with DSC. This (when setup correctly with GPS and registered) will send an emergency signal with your location. I personally think DSC is a great concept but not commonly used, even if you dont set it up, you have at least future proofed your purchase if DSC becomes more widely used. If you go down this path, make sure the sounder can transmit the GPS co-ordinates in the format required by the radio as there are a couple of different ways of transmitting the signals. Any questions on the setup, feel free to ask as I work in a similar field.

Re: Marine Radio and Sounder
the cobra vhf radios aint bad cheap but work well enough but the mics seems cheap bought one to use for monitoring ended up gifting a freind who didint have a radio in his boat an his other half was not happy him going out without a radio
gme stuff looks good for the price the compact stuff i prolly wouldint use as it wouldint disapait the heat fast enough
icom stuffs good but tends to be expensive
i have a yaesu ftm10r thats been moded 50watts double the power
i have an icom f110 if i can sort the software issues but its 10 channel programmable 25watts ya can have if your budget is tight if i can get newer software for it
