I personally prefer 2 units so you don't split the screen or Have to switch screens. I had c maps in my last chart plotter but in my new raymarine a98 I have an avionics platinum card wasn't cheap at $500 card only but it has two charts available 1 for navigation and 1 for fishing heaps more bathymetric information heaps better.

The best combos available are the Garmin gpsmaps.

If you already have a gps unit keep it as maps only and get a Garmin striker 7 which has side view. Down view. Etc

If i were you id look at the lowrance hook series, its perfect for what you want to do, no sidescan however, but i dont think you will need it tbh.
dinga have them on special atm, with navionics card as well (not sure what model card though)

https://www.dinga.com.au/lowrance-hook- ... onars.html

but yeah look around im sure theres some good deals happening atm.

The pre-installed blue charts are perfectly fine, a lot better than navionics silver charts

Bear in mind with the Garmin's you lose sidevu in models below 7" if it's a semi important feature.

I'd go the larger 7" (9" echomap can be found around $1300 with some serious hunting, can never have a big enough screen) single over 2 x 5". Been there, done that (hds5 + navman GPS) and the 9" Garmin in there now is just easier and shitload neater. Page layouts are able to be customised to how you want them with multiple setups able to be saved (larger sonar and smaller GPS pages, engine data+GPS+sonar and any other combo you want.) Only time I'd go twins is with a dedicated sounder like a Furuno, but that's well over your budget by then

the bigger your screen the better you are Imo

When your using your map to go somewhere new or navigate you will love the big screen
