Marine Radio advice
Marine Radio advice
Hi I have a new 4.9 m glass boat. Dealer is putting in a 27 meg radio with antenna. But there is an option to upgrade to vhf. I mostly fish ppb. But imagine I might venture out the bar or may out into the ocean from angel sea or apillo Bay. I do not know how likely I would fish big water in this boat. But i would like to have that option available. Should I just go with the 27 meg or should I go for vhf? Are there 2 in 1 radios? What about DSC? I only want to install one radio so would prefer to install one for now and all time. Thanks for advice.

No need for 27. VHF by law you need a licence to transmit but not to listen.smile0784 wrote:You need a radio licence for 27mhz radio

Re: Marine Radio advice
How far you thinking of going offshore?
Eg at bermagui small boats like ours go to the 6mile and upto the island but thats about it max about 10 to 12nm. And 27mhz is fine.
If going further to the kink 18mn amd beyond vhf is better.
Most commercial boats like trawlers and cargo ships and cruise ships etc use that ao you can listen to the crap they talk about if in range

Re: Marine Radio advice
From a safety perspective VHF any day of the week. It's manned (channel 16 emergency) 24/7, covers a greater distance and doesn't have as much bull chatter across all channels like 27mhz does (especially 72 and 96) that will mask a faint call. Only downside is requirement for a licence to transmit, that isn't hard to obtain

Re: Marine Radio advice
Dsc is a good option you can connect the radio to your gps and on the radio it has a guarded switch if pressed it will transmit your position every so often until it gets a call back. If you have a licence you can get an mmsi number if you have a friend who also has an mmsi number you can put that number in your radio and call him directly when he calls back if your radio is connected to your gps his position will appear on your gps.
I have both on my boat only because some of my mates have only one and I can call either
