You could also cut a slit in the front end wide enough for the arm of the reel foot to slide in. This will keep the rod centred and stop it from rolling to the sides.

Is the angle of the rod enough, so the rod does not pull out ??
I'm no expert, just looks too horizontal

Bowl, Hows that fixing method for your esky working out ?
I have to come up with something similar for mine.
But a bit different, I've done away with the seats in the cuddy cabin and just continued the floor at the same level ( seats were useless in there)
So everything now has to be fixed in there, bit hard to explain, but that mr boats one you put the photo up for doesn't look to bad a way either.

50/50 weather I'll fix it or not...
Been using the esky to sit on while I have been bait fishing..have consider taking away drivers seat n fixing esky on that side,,,,
