Anchor Winch Suggestions

Post by TheGreatestGoat » Thu Aug 24, 2017 7:39 am

Hey All,

So taken a winter hiatus from fishing because I'm **** weak, but getting ready for snapper season.

One thing I'm definitely keen on this year is having an anchor winch. My boat is a 4.5 aluminium so not huge. I've been hunting around but most of the drum style ones (Lonestar etc) all look a bit heavy duty for my needs and all seem to be around 1k which is more than what I was hoping to spend. Don't mind paying for a quality unit but at the same time I don't want something that's totally overkill.

Was having a look at these ones: http://www.southpacific.com.au/new_web/ ... foscatid=3

Would this be suitable? Another thing to consider is I don't have an anchor well so I'm thinking something self contained such as this would be perfect for mounting on the bow.

But no expert so of anyone has any opinions it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

G'day , what model lonestar were you looking at out of interest ?
You would be fine with their smallest I think it's a GX1.
I've got the GX2 on my 6m fibreglass, been fantastic.
Also installed myself, with my old dad, two sets of eyes and hands is a lot easier.
I have only fished/boated in PPB so I got a cheap mud anchor it's been great.
Go the extra yard and get a sock for the chain too, makes it a lot quieter.
You won't regret an anchor winch.

I have a 5mt tinny & I just had a Lone Star GX1 installed after way too much research...it's quite a large investment, but I used it for the 1st time on the weekend and couldn't keep the grin off my face. It was kind of like using a bidet toilet for the 1st time...you instantly think 'this is lovely, why haven't I done this before & now that I've tried it I cant go back'. Apart from no longer having wet, cold, sore hands and aching back...it also keeps the rope and chain nice and tidy.

Save your money a boat that size only needs a light anchor easy to pull in by hand.

I wouldn't bother with a gypsy style winch and a decent small drum like a GX1 will be around 2k if you can't install it yourself. I installed one on a 4.4m mainly for the safety factor as it's an open boat with a casting deck with minimal bow rails and I fish solo a lot at night.
