I believe there are two types of auto inflation, paper when wet expands and sets it off and the hammer type that requires water pressure. My stormy went off last year at bermie we got hit by a wave the boat filled up with water my stormy fell in the water and I pushed it under trying to pick it up boom

depends on model,
i believe you can also convert the manual to auto with most manufacturers by just changing the canister and switch/trigger , easily done when servicing. don't quote me on it though.
