WHAT NOT TO DO WHEN CROSSING A BAR

Post by Paulanderson » Wed Nov 01, 2017 5:17 pm

This video shows what can happen in the blink of an eye. The moral of this one is that you should always position your boat on the back of a wave and keep it there - getting in front of a wave in this sort of situation is a disaster waiting to happen.

Must have been something wrong with the boat, he could've easily come out of that by giving it more throttle and pushing the nose over the swell he was following, before the following sell caught up and pushed the nose down.

I have been in similar situations at Narooma bar and if you can keep on the throttle and also keep an eye on what is happening in front and behind you you should not let the wave behind catch up. In this particular situation it seems he was on his own and may not have seen the wave behind him. At Narooma bar when the tide is streaming out sometimes the incoming waves almost stop dead so you really need to drive your boat.

What happens if you drive faster than the waves and go over the top of one? Same thing, or does the momentum keep the bow from digging in?

Either go over the waves or literally through them. Momentum as well as the boats design prevents what happened in the video (mostly). It's throttle down, hold on and go for it.

Few things with that video, typical yank design inshore boat. Big, wide sides on a low bow section with a wide open casting deck. Not designed at all for what old mate was attempting. If you look at the offshore designed yank boats, very high bows that are quite narrow, not to dissimilar to many of our plate alloy designs

Then there are some that never should be driving a boat! Trying to reverse course in the middle of a bar is usually a really bad idea.
