Quick Hook ups for Trailer Chains
Quick Hook ups for Trailer Chains
Been looking for a way for 6-7 months to hook up my trailer faster and without having to unscrew, find the hole, and screw the d-shackle especially when it's under the car. Had given up because none of the hooks I had used in the USA were considered legal in Australia. Finally saw this on all the Utes at the marine dealer - tow hooks or winch hooks.
Found some grade 80 6mm AS3776 compliant self locking winch hooks. They are 2ton load capacity each. My BMT is 1 ton. Just wanted to share.
Chain a little long with the hook so used the 3rd link and doubled up the first link to avoid any dragging.

Just unscrew, find the hole, and screw the D-shackle mate, it's not worth all the anxiety

Looks a bit of an over kill with the size of chain, anyhow
I’d Swap those shackles for connecting links making it semi perm.

Could not find anything smaller. Looks like 2 ton is the smallest I could find. Even tow hooks minimum go 3 ton. I don't think a connecting link will fit through the holes. Different vehicles may have different hook up systems. Mine is under the car. I see some have them up next to the tow ball which makes hooking much easier bec it facilitates line of sight. Too many times I have twisted the d shackle at night or blind and find it has not even engaged. There's not enough tactile feedback.
PS. It is an overkill as regulations only req 1.5 times of weight.

Got this from vic roads on trailers. Could not find anything specific for boats.smile0784 wrote:I feel your frustration especially in the dark

So the shackle is AS2741. The hook is AS3776.

Re: Quick Hook ups for Trailer Chains
Now thats interesting, I thought that a few years back, there was a big issue with rated shackles ???
In fact, I was reading somewhere that the men in blue were actually ticketing boaters for non compliant shackle rating,
Maybe it was NSW, but I do remember an issue......
