Very common for gummies, seals to follow salmon schools.

Find a school catch a salmon send out a chunk bait and 9 out of 10 times you will hook up to a gummy.
Surely a gummy can't catch or chew/swallow a live salmon? I thought they were more foragers rather than predators.
Not a personal experience but have heard of gummies taking live kgw, they are certainly much more of a predator than I first realised

Hey Purple, what sort of sonar transducer are you running ? I’ve got a pretty basic HSTWBL I think it’s called.
It gets similar readings to your results but if I use the bottom zoom it has better bottom reading and does give better results picking up reef.
I’ve also got a structurescan transducer for the bottom and side scan. It gives similar results to your downscan images - it’s great.
Just thought I’d see if you use the bottom zoom feature.

All I know is they always seem to be following salmon schools and it is super easy to turn a salmon into a gummy.
Fair enough!

It’s not uncommon to find snapper around on the bottom below salmon schools in western port.

Awesome pics mate.
What sort of sounder you have?

Did you end up with any? Lol

You need to catch some for bait for when we go gummy hunting lol

Thanks guys.
It has taken me a long time to work.out what's what on the sounder and how to setup and read it properly. But theres always something to learn from others..
If any of tou guys are scratching your heads wondering wtf all this is and want to.know then post on here and I'll try and break it down to make it easier to understand.

Happy for someone else to also jump in and explain if they want to do so
Cheers

Also, is that a big kingy on the left in the first screenshot amongst the salmon?
I saw that as well and was wondering what it was...

Im not sure what it was tbh. It certainly was looking for a piece or two of that salmon school by the looks of it..
All the fish were around 25-35 cm in size in the school.

I've got a total scan transducer on an elite ti 9 unit.
I havent used bottom zoom lock . Might look into it. Where do I find that on the lowrance units.
Half the problem.is getting the transducer mounted properly and my boat has a very unique hull which makes everything twice as hard....

Yep. Have had 50cm fish caught under a salmon school before . But the biggest problem.is getting the lure to sink past the salmon school and into where the snapper are sitting.
