Battery help wanted

Post by hornet » Sat Aug 24, 2019 1:32 am

As most here are aware I'm refurbishing a 4.1 tinny, My question is directed to the Kayakers predominately and anyone with a small tinny.
I'm working out the electrics and would like to know what size and type of battery are you using ?
My engine is a non electric pull start Johnson and does not have charging capability so the battery will go on a charger when I get home after every trip.
All it will be used for is a fish finder / Nav lights / bilge pump so in reality the only thing that will run all day is the fish finder.
The Kayakers will want to keep the weight down But I don't need to take that into consideration.`

Any information accepted ... thx guys.
He who has the most fishing rods WINS ! :ts:

Gday Hornet as you said your motor is pull start so you won’t be concerned about CCA.

Work out the total current consumption of all accessories then get a battery with enough Ah to cover you for the duration of the trip without completely depleting the battery.

That’s a very basic description I’ll help more if you get stuck

Dont buy the small motorbike/jet ski style of batteries. Not worth the cost.

Buy a good battery (calcium style) and a good charger or even a solar panel to keep charge in the battery. Then maintain the battery. There will be a time when you want to add stuff to the boat, so having a bigger battery is a better idea.

I have a small tinny like yours, but also run an electric motor (sometimes). My battery size is a 680CCA marine calcium (lion battery brand)
I also have:
Nav lights
Soundger/gps
Bilge pump
2 x led spot lights
Am/fm radio
27mg radio

Pays to have a better battery so if you do add to it, it can handle more power consumption.
Because its not cranking, you could look at a Deep cycle style battery also.

I would get the biggest deep cycle battery that fits and invest in a trickle charger that you connect when you get home. That way it is kept at the optimal voltage and will last longer. I have always done this with boats and cars In the past that don't get used much and never had any problems.

I've got a 3.8. Personally, I just run a jump starter pack for the small accessories for saltwater work. I also have 2x deep cycles for trolling with the leccy in the fresh.

if it's any help I use FPV Power batteries and use the 7 AH model some use there 17.5 AH
for us they work out pretty good as they are light - Water Proof - have safe guards against shorts and of cause are small and light

I also like the fact that i can charge it of my cigarette lighter in the car or off the camper in a non powered site
