Dealership/service guy has to make a quid. If you happy with the price and the quality of the work then pay up and go fishing. I have personally serviced my own cars and outboards for the last 10 years because I was often unhappy with the quality of the workmanship, poor service, being lied to, charged top dollar for original parts, etc. I have found that I can trust myself to do a good job more than I can trust the “professionals”. I also don’t mind doing the work and I love the huge savings. I do my 2008 115hp mercury 4 stroke servicing for under $100 in parts and fluids and it takes about an hour. Sometimes 2 hours if I need to do the impeller. Not for everyone but it’s a hobby that saves me $1000s.
Spot on here -I service my Colorado and 2017 Yamaha 40 hp 4 stroke-I do a 100 hrs service each 50 hrs as I use the boat nearly every 2nd day,The only time I dont use it is when the wind is up-Not much else stops me.
With the new Yamaha they gave me a 4 year warranty if the dealer services it and a 2 year one If I service it -I went for the 2 year one as there should not be any trouble for years with a new donk
In the service manual It doesnt call up a diagnostic check -The only trouble is when a oil pressure or temp light pops up or buzzer goes off

Just got my 50hp 2 stroke serviced today at my local tohatsu dealer.
Heres the receipts of work done and how much it cost last service and also this current one.
It's nowhere near what some of the other prices quoted here..
Not having a go at any dealers or trying to start WW3, just stating what I paid with actual proof of receipt...

You can see what's been done in the receipt, only thing that hasn't been changed is thermostat and housing. It's in good nick and didnt need to be changed last year and this year too. Boat is used regularly and motor has 240 hours on it currently..

Thanks for the feedback - useful to know.

I ended up having mine serviced on site (which was very convenient) - cost was $450.

For a 2018 Yamaha 90HP 4 stroke outboard, do I need to bring it to a yamaha authorized dealer to service it to maintain warranty or can I get a mobile mechanic to do it? I was quoted $500 by a dealer.

Thanks!

If it's under warranty then best to go to a dealer to avoid headaches if something happens down the line in the warranty period.

That's what I would do anyway, after warranty expires tgen take it to where your comfortable. Just my opinion.

I pay for a service on my 2015 2 stroke 50hp Merc $380 from Mainline marine in Willy. John's a top bloke and more importantly a good mechanic. I dont think for a 4 stroke the cost is much more.

$700-$800 for a basic service seems a little expensive.

I service my 3cyl 2stroke yamaha 30hp. Service kit plus anodes. $140 Add some oil for the gearbox and you end up with at least $150 in parts. Most workshops will charge at least $80 hr for labour. So on a bigger motor or a 4 stroke if you get charged under $400 I would look very closely at what you actually got. Services for our 300hp suzuki 4 stroke motors on the Coast Guard boat are around $900 each, plus any extra faults found.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

seems like your prices are similar to mine and and almost identical motor.
do you know what was done to yours for the service?

i believe a 4 stroke will never be the same price as what we have paid, always be a bit higher.

Thinking of attempting a DIY for the next one.
Cheers
