Picking A First Boat.

Post by Leronzia » Fri Dec 27, 2019 2:52 pm

Hey All,

Looking To Buy An Aluminium Boat roughly 4.5+ meters, with my budget 10-20k its a first boat ao nothing crazy but something that can get me out to gummies reds and kingies in the peak season (handle the bay basically.) i would also like a 4 stroke engine preferably for ease of use. Ive looked around and seens some 475 bayhunters are they any good. Savages etc but would really love others help or opinion.

Thanks,
Lero

My last two boats.
Savage 455 50 hp ,pros, light easy to tow .
Cheap to run.
No rot to worry about.
Drill n mount stuff is easy.
Negative , bit rough of a ride.
Wet ride without canopy.

Caribbean cobra 4.8 90 hp
Pros , top speed. was around 70 K boat flew
Plenty of fishing room.
Lot smoother ride, can travel further with more comfort.
Negative
Would go threw fuell . expensive to run.
Lot of maintenance keeping it shinny, black marks from ramp.
Chips in gel coat on boat.
Worrying about rot.

Conclusion.
My next boat will be 495 surtess.
Or something like 520 Haines runabout.
With a 4stroke
To many boats kayak, helicopter , catch a fish, catch a fish

Smaller boats are just as capable in the right hands. Check out tinnyvsocean on Facebook for example

Kingies are (for the most part) targeted offshore, but a 4.5m tinny can get out there and target them safely if ya pick ya days. I have a 485 bay runner and not afraid of going well offshore in it. Sometimes I believe it's even safer offshore than what it is in the ripping WPB currents.
