20HP outboard for 4.2M soft inflatable?

Post by HK_Freedom » Sun Jul 24, 2022 2:53 pm

After getting my license half year ago, I have been practicing with a trolling motor, which is very weak and only suitable for very calm weather. Now that I think it's time to buy a outboard to make the boat sime actualy use. I am currently looking at 20HP outboard, as it seems to be of good balance of power and weight for my intended use.

Because I do not have actual experience in outboard motor, I would like to ask if 20HP outboard is sufficient for a 4.2m inflatable boat to be safely cruising along the shore? At the moment I think I do not need super fast operation, just want to make sure if a 20HP outboard is good for mild wind conditions in Victoria.

Currently I am looking at the Tohatsu and Honda 20HP Models. Any insights into these 2 brands for a newbie?

20 HP on a 4.2 seems a bit under powered to me, I would be looking at 30 - 40 HP, you will need it if you are not alone.
Cheers

Thank you for the insight. It might sound like a foolish question, just wonder how much difference on the thrust between a 30hp and 40hp in actual operation with 4 people? We are a family of 4 :)

What's the maximum rated hp of the boat?

the boat will have a plate to tell you max HP. A 20hp motor on an inflatble is plenty. Unlike traditional boats, they don't weigh much

50hp sounds fun....I presume you need a short shaft tiller steer? (Best engine is the lightest with the most displacement....best price and warranty help a lot too)

4 people with 20hp is not ideal.
Remember that you need the hp if things get real bad on the water.
A small hp outboard will barely be able to plane. Let alone fight against waves.
Tohatsu and Honda are both reputable brands.

So, is 30HP adequate in that case? Budget and weight are 2 main factors for me at the moment apart from safety. That’s why I originally looked at 20hp options. But it seems to be marginal for my case. Just wonder if 30hp is okay in that case.

You will need 30Hp minimum ideally 40Hp.

You wont be able to get on the plane with 20Hp.
