Is it possible to repair a car tyre
So yesterday i realised i had a flat tyre. No biggie.
Thort i be lazy and get racv out to change it. (Got a roadside membership so why not)
Got it changed, put the spare on no problems.
Found out it was a small nail that has caused it. Bugger i said.
Tyres are inly a few months old too.
Racv guy said cant put a tube in them so have to replace it.
My question is are they able to be fixed any other way?
Possibly like a bike tyre patch?
Or do i have to pay $130 for a new tyre.

Re: Is it possible to repair a car tyre
Not sure about a permanent repair for a car tyre. On my motorbikes I carry a tyre plug kit and repair them on the road with the tyre still on the bike. Then I pump them back up and ride off. Usually get the tyre permanently repair at the bike shop later. They remove the tyre from the rim and plug it from the inside and it is permanent. You can use the temporary kit on a car tyre while out on the road, but not sure about a permanent repair. You would need to ask the tyre shop.
There's nothing . . . absolutely nothing . . . half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats.

My understanding is it can be repaired if it is on the tread part of the tyre, but if the tyre wall ( side ) has been damaged then it is a throw away and start again job. Most tyre shops will be able to give you a quick answer. Or your mechanic

Definitely seek a second opinion mate. Sounds like it might be worth fixing.

Take it to a reputable tyre place and get it fixed, will cost about $30 to $50.

I use a similar kit to this http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/Produc ... ece/130242 on my Landcruiser. I absolutely swear by it...!
I've got two tyres still running the plugs after about 60, 000 k's, including one plug in a sidewall...!

Re: Is it possible to repair a car tyre
if its on the sidewall kiss it goodbye, most of the time on the bottom tread area it can be fixed they use a patch from the inside of the tyre, its not like a normal patch, you will have to see how its done.
heres the dodgy way to do it

and heres the PROPER WAY TO DO IT

you can see which one is better from the videos, expect to pay $20-30 for the dodgy repair and around $50 for the good one

They are an emergency fix only, not for permanent repairs. The wheel should also be balanced after the repair.

Re: Is it possible to repair a car tyre
I would have said the same a few years ago, but I've had first hand experience with them being a permanent fix, and never had the need to balance the 33" Landcruiser tyres when plugged. I also run a 3100 kg Woodchipper, tandem axle, that is forever picking up nails. The plugs in those last me the life of the tyre, including sidewall intrusions.Brett wrote: They are an emergency fix only, not for permanent repairs. I guess its up to the user as to how long you run with them. It's not as if they are unsafe, or the tyre will blow apart if the plug fails, because you haven't done anything thing to compromise the tyre structure. A plug failure will just deflate again as if it had a nail.
