Ford territory towing issue

Post by smile0784 » Sat Jul 08, 2017 12:35 am

My wifes holden cruise had a few issues so we traded it in and We just bought a 2010 ford territory ts rwd as the family car and to pull the boat when we go away on trips.

Planning a 3 week trip to brisbaine and back via bermagui start of august nice 3900km trip and need the car and trailer to be balanced

Tow capacity of territory 2.3t
Has a hayman reese tow ball.
Happy with the car when not towing.

Issue when towing around here ( to mornington and crib point) with out loading extra stuff the back end sags about 10cm down lifting the front up but is satisfactory.

Boat specs
Boat tare weight 1460kg
Tow ball weight 90kg

When we go away in the car add 3 people, baby and dog 300kg, car freezer with food 40kg, a few bags 10kg.
Making weight so far 1810

In boat
esky full dry food 15kg, suit cases ×2 -20kg, fishing tackle 20kg, tool box, jack, etc 15kg, extra fuel 50kg. Pram and baby stuff 5kg,
Total weight 1935.
Probably forgot a heap so lets make it about 2 ton.

So with adding extra 500kg i presume the back is going to go down further.
I do have a WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION HITCH rated at 160KG to put on.

Is there a easy way to stiffen up the back springs and shockers so i dont get so much sag.

Or should i get heavy duty springs and shockers installed for $1400.

I can put the tool box and fuel and anchor and chain (about 80 to 100kg) at back of the boat to shift the weight a bit but cant put too much back there.

Any ideas are appreciated

I would seriously look at poly air bags if its only for that once a year trip and you don't want to ruin your daily drive give them a go. I put them in my prado and have bought some for my lc200. My mates who both have lc200 have installed them one tows a 23ft caravan one a haines 680 love them.
If you are towing evertday do your springs

You could slide the boat 10-15cm backward on the trailer, that worked for me.

Just make sure you tie the boat down properly.

His ball weight is at 6% which is as low as you can safely go with a tadem trailer. Refucing the ball weight will likely become unstable.

WDH are great but I think you need to upgrade the suspension. 10cm of sag is massive.

My Territory (2008 ts) drops only a couple of cm with 110kg on the towball so I'd get it looked at.

Are you able to install the suspension yourself?

I have no mechanical training but could possibly do it.
I had a look at putting in air springs.
Looks easy enough from utube

did the car come with a Towbar when you bought it, if so id say its been used to tow frequently and the suspension must be worn out for it to sag that much.
as others have already mentioned might need to upgrade to some heavy duty suspension.
