NBN providers.

Hi all
The time has come for me to get the NBN on at home. I have checked out a few providers. A mate recommends 'Aussie Broadband' and I read by chance somewhere, and then sussed out 'My Republic' (this one may be more suitable for gamers) that had reliable fast speeds. Another friend uses and likes 'Belong'.

I live home alone so therefore my needs are rather simple. At this point I will only use the net for youtube videos and social media. I never bother downloading movies, nor do I even know how to! As for speed, I will get 25 Mbps as I assume getting 50 would be pointless? My view is start with a speed that is adequate for what I do now and then increase it if needed.

So...are there any providers that I should avoid? Any ones that you would recommend?
cheers
Team Bender
My post count will increase exponentially when I have NBN!!

25 MBPS is plenty for casual use, especially if you live alone.

However, quite often the speed that is promised\delivered can vary significantly.
This is something that is often a variable based on hardware at the delivery end (around your house),

Might be worth checking in with some people in your local area, who have made the switch to see what their experience is like.

You hear good and bad stories from just about all of them. I went with Telstra recently on a 50 MPS plan and get that speed most of the time. They also supply their SmartModem Gen 2 with a built in SIM, so if your wired internet goes down, the modem automatically switches to the 4G mobile network so that you maintain phone and internet connectivity.

Telstra is the best provider, pure and simple. They own almost all of the network. People say too expensive but you can package it in with your mobile plan, homephone, foxtel etc and get a pretty good deal.

Avoid dodo, dcsi, unless you want constant headaches, disconnections and very poor and hard to understand customer service.

A lot of good words about iinet and tpg but I've never used them personally.

Aussie broadband are based in Gippsland, you’ll get good service when it comes to troubleshooting unlike say Telstra, where it’s a “good luck” scenario. iiNet also has an Aussie based call centre.

Other than that just go with 25mbt, you can always bump it up.

Let's give everyone in Australia super fast internet.......

Actually let's give everyone in Australia semi fast internet.....

Actually, let's make the semi fast internet the top tier, add another mid tier for ok internet and a lower tier that is barely better than ADSL+2 for anyone that's left over

Moral of the story. Australia's implementation of NBN is a joke. The fact that the speed of the internet is "tiered" and tied to the amount you are willing to pay defeats the idea of super fast internet for the masses.

My cable internet still achieves better speeds than NBN and has done for the last 10 years.

PS - I can't help you with what provider to go with....

The fact it was setup as it is, with retail providers leasing expectant bandwidth off of NBN Co who are beyind approach by end users, yet are the only ones who can troubleshoot and fix 95% of the issues encountered was always going to be a giant shitfight. NBN Co are more disorganized and dysfunctional than even centrelink. Adding the coalitions cheapening and chop/change policy of fibre/copper/nodes depending on where you are was just the cherry on top of an overbudget pile of ****.

Providers will be much of a muchness. Whether that's Aussie, Iinet, Optus, Telstra, belong or any other with a decent name. The plan with the best data offer for your money would be my tip. If there's a fuckup you're at the mercy of the dickheads at NBN Co and not your retail provider in most cases anyway.

I have been with internode now about 10 years and they have been fantastic.
NBN was installed last year and worked initially then started having dropouts. They were straight onto it and a technician sorted it out. Currently I am on a 500GB plan monthly and getting 11 times the speed I had when I was on ADSL.
Very happy with the NBN.

Personally I'm with Telstra but have friends and Neighbours in our area who are with Aussie Broadband and have never had an issue I hope this helps

We never had issues with dodo ADSL and when changed over to NBN the speed got fast and haven't had a issue in 3 years we been here.
