Get into them mate and do something different release it.

Don't mind me, I've released (lost) more than landed

Hooking one is hard enough, landing is another tough challenge.

I would fish the slack tide.
And if you could, release it quick and safe after some photos.

Wow. mulloway need many skill. What a challenge
That's why it's very rewarding if you catch one. Because it's hard to catch.

But then again, I saw an old man caught a mulloway on a stinking pilchard with $40 rod and rusty reel. They are so hard to predict.

I've hooked mulloway on live bait, cranka crab, even small chicken piece!
There were times I got one heavy rod with big bait etc and the mulloway decided to take a piece of prawn intended for bream.

So you just gotta try and spend the hours.

One thing I'm pretty confident in, they like slack water.
I remember a time I went out of my way to get fresh squid with a mate, we got some and got to our spot and baited up a rod each with the fresh squid. Also chucked out another rod with half an old frozen pillie. Guess which one the jewie took? :)
Hummm that's hard to answer.... Let me guess, the half frozen pillie???
Do I win a rod reel combo? :super:

Sounds like a plan mate. Fish around a tide change. That’s when I have had the most luck with these things :)

FWIW

There was a western port comp ran out of my local fishing club around a year ago. 3 mulloway were caught over the weekend. It wasn't fresh or live squid that did the damage either contrary to popular belief. It was humble old frozen servo pilchard that accounted for all 3.

It's all about time and a lot of luck when it comes to Melbourne jew fish
