My first Mulloway - OMG - Part 2.
Well, I guess some of you have read SFP Chick’s post regarding her Mulloway experience last week.
Yesterday afternoon we headed back to the same spot on the Maribyrnong River to see if we could land her that first Mulloway. I might just add at this point that I had never caught one either!
We were joined by our mate the Gummy Whisperer, an Honorary member of the SFP Team and great mate of mine too, he grew up fishing the Maribyrnong River and has 35 years experience fishing the Marby, he can pull big Bream from it almost at will, but he too had never caught a Mulloway!
We had everything we needed, (Yes, a landing net came along this time!), Fresh bait, nice day, high tide just after dark, but someone forgot the milk for the coffee (SFP Chick)!
SFP Chick had her baits out where she had them last week, I had a live Mullet out and was casting SP’s and GW had a bait out and was also casting SP’s.
No joy was had up until dark except for mullet and undersize Bream. GW pulled the pin around 9:30, just before high tide.
I had had enough of casting SP’s and sent out a fresh Scad fillet bait on a running sinker rig not far from my live mullet. About 10 mins later I noticed little nibbles on the scad bait, picked up the rod and struck and line sizzled off the reel for about 3 seconds, then nothing, whatever it was had spat the bait, typical Mulloway behaviour.
Out went another fresh Scad fillet bait, I thought my chance had gone. About 20 mins later, again little nibbles on the Scad, I picked up the rod and struck harder this time, line sizzled off again, no escape this time, you’re knicked sunshine!
Not a huge fight but the sight of a slender silver fish on the end of the line was awesome. A nice net shot by SFP Chick and I had my first Mulloway under my belt, 45cm and just over a kilo I reckon.
I wished GW had have left me his last Crownie!
Cheers,
Cam.

Awesome work Cam. Some people fish for years on years without catching one.
Linc- "slimeys are great fun to catch, like hooking a giant vibrator with a propeller onto the end of your rod! Well done"

Two of similar size were caught last weekend near the old Humes site.Salmon wrote:Still can't believe that these are in the bloody Marby!
A mate of mine was walking over the pedestrian bridge at the bottom of Afton St last summer, looked down into the river and two 10kg+ models were cruising by just under the surface!

Well done Cam :a_goodjob:
There must be quite a few Jewies loitering around the Maribyrnong.
A friend's cousin caught this little fella on Friday night using chicken breast as bait.

Beautiful fish...I just hope they both went back unharmed as they're well undersized. Still, very good effort, always exciting to hook a jewie/soapie up. :victory:

Good point Cuda,
I can certainly say that the one Cam caught swam away to be caught another day when he's a whopper.
Good reminder to all mate.
Cheers

Re: My first Mulloway - OMG - Part 2.
the marby and yarra systems have a very healthy population of mulloway (jewies). having fished both these rivers for over 35 yrs for bream, i cant count the number of times that i have been smashed by these mainly night time preditors But i have never landed one on my bream gear (2kg line) I have tried to target them but results have been poor. Now im obsessed and will put some serious hours into catching my first one. cheers
