Same as for boats but you don't need the red and green nav lights I believe. Keep in mind kayaks are low to the water, don't have much of a silhouette and a small light is easily 'lost' among a backdrop of residential lights onshore - you should make sure you have as bright a light as possible or you risk becoming a speed bump to a passing boat. The risk of this is heightened during snapper season when you'll have blokes cruising around fixated on their sounders looking for arches.
There's some interesting DIY designs on Vyak using LED strips that will make you stick out like dogs balls on the water.
It's a good idea to have an EPIRB or PLB at night because your chances of being spotted by a passing boat if you get in trouble are less at night. It's also a good idea to have a GPS and a backup like the Navionics app on your phone because it is really easy to get disorientated at night.

All of the safety items mentioned above make sure you can be seen at all times from all angles.
Other items that are essential to fishing are tackle world shirts or Shimano jumpers. :rofl:

I'd also have: Bouyant waterproof torch, Mobile phone in Wproof Lanyard, Triband VHF floating handheld

On my kayak I wrapped about 1.5m of this led rope around the top of some 20mm pvc pipe that I sit in a vertical rod holder behind me

The wire runs down the inside of the pvc to a switch then the positive wire runs through a 3 amp blade fuse (typical car fuse type) then positive and negative attach to a small battery I got from jaycar. Cost me about $60 all up and is very bright. A few weekends ago a kayaker told me he could clearly see me launch at apex park all the way from millers road in the dark. Also try to use cool white rather than warm white as warm white can be hard to distinguish from street lights on shore :thumbsup:
