Is that one of those notched style paddles that TNP make?

Looks like it.
Ok for creeks and rivers that don't have strong flows and you just want to make small kayak position adjustments. The hook part will help if you go past a tree with branches, a rope etc to easily hook on to hold position.
As a regular paddle I would not recommend it.
