Open the Abus and change the drags out then they're fine. TLDs are mass overkill. I'd never go back to a 15 let alone a 20.

I used to be a fan of level winds but now I prefer non level wind reels, two reasons, less parts to fail and clog ( mainly the worm )

And a bug bear of mine, if the line snaps at the spool and you just re-thread the line in the guide, the line may be at the opposite end of the spool from the guide, the synchronization is out the door ! causing a huge birds nest on the next cast.

ABU7000 drags are fine the entire reels are just not up to the loads involved.

TLD 15 is a poor reel out of the box, handel is too small. For the very few extra $$$ the TLD20 is much better choice.

Just get a daiwa saltist bluewater pe 2-4 rod and a daiwa bg6500 reel. And go fishing.
This combo will cost you under $200 per item and will catch you gummies to tuna and snapper.
40lb rated rod and 15kg drag rated reel with 500m of 40lb capacity. Thats plenty.....

the stock drags are **** weak, I'd certainly not say the rest of the reels are, even when running 20+oz of lead.

If I was buying an outfit right now, it's a charter special on a gb1609 any day. If I wanted to spend more I'd throw a Tekota 600/700 or Torium 16/20 on the same rod. An Abu 7000 would be the next choice. Never once had an issue with the smaller reels running up-to 40oz of lead, plus the kelp clumps and big angry rays or giant paper bag 7 gills. I'd whack a Tld 20 on a 10kg stick for small Makos and school tuna, they're overkill for the smooth hounds and even large school sharks

Charter special on an ugly stick does the job fine for an affordable combo. You can fit 300 yards of 30lb braid on them, which is plenty of string for a big gumbo. A Tld15 or 20 is better suited for offshore work imo. Each to their own though...

I have a $39 glass rod&reel Kmart combo which I have been using for gummies & snapper for almost 4 years now. Largest snapper caught on it was 8.2kg and similar gummy.

However, if you still want to spend big $$ on gear, go to Anaconda and get your hands on to a $99 PENN Spinfisher combo.

I recently bought my first boat and I don't have a lot of boat based experience but I too purchased an ABU7000 and a charter special for gummies.

After getting help with both my boat and a few fishing tips from an experienced person I realised my gear was completely inadequate.

I have since purchased TLD20's and use them with the original rods. Overkill no but they make the job much easier.

40oz of lead where can you buy that? The biggest I have seen is 16oz and they are huge.
