What's more important, a good rod or a good reel?

If you were going to choose to invest a little bit more in one than the other, what would you do?

I would go the reel. More importantly, a reel with good quality drag.

both play equal parts imo both can let you down, thats why if you look in the rod an reel section people trying to find a balance.
but all depends on what your likely targeting or may encounter. i bought a 14 ft 6 penn 15kg rod atm has a hyperloop 6000 6kg drag on it crap reel till next week i went that way because i doubted i would need a bigger reel atm for where i'm fishing, but both can be played with drag wise, or snap a rod due to too much drag on a heavy reel with lite rod if you make that mistake.

its your choice, scraglor is right too, but you need to provide more info.

Balance your outfit to your needs. There is no correct answer to that question

I'd prefer a good reel on a crap rod opposed to a crap reel on a good rod anyway but yeah both do play equal parts

I'd prefer a balanced quality outfit. Rather then an expensive reel on a cheap rod or vice versa is much prefer a moderate cost rod with a moderate cost reel.

Just like what most of the others said, its a balance between the 2.
that's why a lot of people have caught good fish on some cheap but balanced outfits instead of using a heavy tuna rod with a tiny 1000 size reel

Sounds like getting the balance right is the most important part. I'm considering getting a second reel for a rod I have and I wondered if I should just get a combo instead or buy a decent reel and match it to a better rod later. I don't want to spend a lot right now. Guess I'll just have a look in the shop and see what my options are.
