So you get your answer, the technical name is a sidecast reel. You spin the reel 90 degrees the same as you do a handline to cast

I got several mint Alvey vintage reels which I happen to restore to like new condition.

Thanks mate I'll research into them a little more

They do seem very popular within this community but I hardly see anyone using them around wpb or the 90 mile.

In Queensland & Nothern NSW Alvey's are very popular.
