Penn vs Shimano

Post by Kimtown » Thu Sep 14, 2017 8:23 am

It seems like there are a lot of Shimano fan boys here but hopefully I can get some unbiased opinions.

Look at 4 new reels. Around 4500-5500s

I was pretty adamant on 4 stradics or saragosas or whatever the 1 above the Sienna or Sedona is called but my cousin who owns the shop I would be buying them from is 100% certain the entry level model penn is just as good a real and far better value for money. It's the spinfisher v I'm pretty sure. Then added if I wanted to spend similar money as the shimanos I was after I could look at a conflict of a slammer which he thinks are basically as good as the top range shimanos, like a stella but a fraction of the price.

He's a very ******* good fisho and knows his ****, so I tend to trust his word (especially considering he's trying to save me money while losing out on some on his own) but I'm just wondering what everyone else's thoughts are as well who maybe have used both.

I was under the impression that Penn used to be the crème de la crème of reels back in the day, but like a lot of manufactures, they bastardised their brand by moving the manufacturing to China. What are you using the reels for?

Yeah they were always the top echelon of reels to my knowledge then went the way of jarvis, shimano etc and sold out their very base level models to China

But their higher models are still manufactured in the US to my knowledge.

The reels will be for general wpb use for the run of the mill fish (up to 5 kilo snapper and 8-10 kilo gummies) I already have heavier stuff for the bigger stuff in the western entrance/off-shore, and lighter stuff for whiting/pinkies, just need some good medium weight stuff.

Do you have other penns or shimamos?
Are you ocd and need them all to match?

Is there much price difference between the reels?

I dont know much about penns but shimano are pretty dam good in my opinion.

Well I'm buying 4 new rods/reels, why wouldn't I match them with whatever I find Is the best value for money? Lol

As for Shimano reels, I have 2 2500 Sienna's and regularly use 4500 Sedonas. They are very nice indeed for their value. But my cousin seems to think the penns are even better. Only penns I have are my 320gt overhead (old me clunky now but does the job for heavy stuff) and a very, very expensive 2500 spin reel that's about 10 years old, don't know what the model is but it's really nice. Obviously penn has changed a lot since then though.

He had the conflict 2 and slammers in stock. Really really nice reels.

Not sure I need ones that good for dirty old pinkie bait fishing, thinking the spinfisher v might be enough for me

If your only fishing for pinkies then get the cheapest reels you can buy mate, they are not that destructive on gear.
The spinfishers are a lot heavier and bulkier compared to their equivalent other brands.
But they certainly are built like a tank.

I would just buy some sienna 2500 sized reels and be done with it, in fact the $99 BCF promotion sienna reel, sonic pro rod and karikai braid would have been perfect for these applications but too late now, the reel and rod can still be purchased for $79 on the current special.
