I was using the same marine grease i use for the trailer bearings.
Is that the same as you use?
Too thick..use grease meant for reels they are a lot lighter and will not make the reel hard to wind
I use Inox wheel bearing grease in my slammers No problem

I use the valvoline grease and no issues, secondary to reel functioning the bodies arent meant to seal too well so pack that grease in

I worked at a tackle shop servicing reels a few years back and i learnt from a guy in Coffs Harbour that a good quality marine or boating grease mixed with Inox to slightly thin out worked best. In high performance baitcasters and small spinning reels a thinner grease used sparingly will keep them spinning freely. Check out alantani.com for more info on servicing your own reels.
