Reel recomendation pls

Post by Brett » Tue Mar 05, 2019 6:21 pm

I picked up a cpl of prevails today and would like some advice on what would be a good reel to match them with.
I’d like to keep it below $250 per reel if possible.
Would like to have about 300m of 20/30lb braid(most likely tasline from Frank).
They will be my new gummy/beach outfits, so need to cover the general rubbish that comes with the good stuff.

Not really fussed on brand.

Thanks guys n girls.

Penn Slammers. Good drag, solid as a rock and easy to service. If you're not actively spinning with them the extra weight is no issue.
2015/16 Fisting Victoria Species comp total: 289cm

Flathead: 51cm; Squid: 36cm; Australian Salmon: 51cm; Snapper 46cm; Silver Trevally 23cm; KGW: 45cm

G'day Brett

Not sure the rod you are talking about but I bought a Penn Spinfisher SSM surf combo with a Penn 950 SSm reel (on special for the price of the reel). A decent respectable combo.

The Penn 950 SSm reel is exactly like 4litres says about the Penn Slammers but probably it's more an entry level reel compared to the Slammers. The quality does me as it's a balance on price too. A year or so later I bought an Uglystick Surf Rod (ridiculously cheap on a "closing down" sale) and bought another Penn 950 SSm reel for that rod too. Mate who got me into surf fishing (Don) also swapped his two surf reels for Penn 950 SSm too. Now to make it clear, a slight step up on quality would be good but these do us just fine, for the price. And yes we do fish "reel heavy", a 750 or 850 would have been fine

Good luck

Cheers, Bugatti

If you are going to spend that coin you may as well go the 10000 saragosa and then you can double that up for tuna/kingfish as well.
I too bought a prevail 12ft 8 to 12 kg arrived today, I am pairing it up with a daiwa emcast which is spooled with 20 lb maxima

maybe even look at Fin Nor Lethal - I'm using one on a light jigging outfit ( an LT40 ) that has 270 meters of 30 lb - 8 strand braid on it
my rat kingy stick

I also picked up an LT60 cheap which is quite a bit heavier but with hold about 330 meters of 30 lt braid and will replace the first penn 560 that gives up
both seam fairly smooth and have good drag - from all reports are pretty robust you can normally find them for around $ 95 on special from Dinga and other places

I picked up my LT40 from Anaconda on special for $ 85 and the LT60 for $ 60 else where so they don't break the bank
My kayak PBs
Gummy shark 128 Cm - Elephant fish 85 Cm - Snapper 91 Cm - KG Whiting 49 Cm - Flathead 55 Cm - Garfish 47 Cm - Silver Trevally 40 Cm - Long Tail Tuna 86 Cm - snook 64 Cm - Couta 71 Cm - Sth Calamari 44 Cm hood - Cobia 117 cm

Dont discount the Daiwa BG, the 4.5k/5k would be ideal and @180 bucks with free delivery from dinga you will have enough left over to spool them as well and be within budget.
no magseal, carbon drag and bushing instead of a LRB will make sure its easy to maintain.

I put Penn Spinfisher V 6500 with shimano aerowave 8-12kg surf 12ft rod. A brick and a light pole. Heavy as, but tough as. I reckon I could kill a shark by just hitting the rod and reel on them once.

Would rather not spend that much lol :o_0:

I'm leaning towards the Emcast 4500 myself as I have 5500's on my Okuma Xfactor rods and they have performed well for the past 7 or 8 yrs. I was just seeing what everyone else favored or was using.

The Daiwa Emblem Surf 5500 is built for distance casting, very solid work horse reels with a strong drag, very happy with mine. Comes in at $250 exactly
