hi guys
just after some recomendations for a surf rod.
i usually fish at venus bay, with my 7foot 5 spin rod
targeting mainly salmon, and possibly gummy.
have a budget of $150

If your just learning surf fishing just get a kmart cheapie that way if you bust it you dont lose as much.

Carrottt, those Penn Spinfisher SSM Combos are pretty decent for their price. They come with a variety of reel options. I went with the 950 SSM, but the 850 is great too. Mate Don followed suit too and got one AND he's a Surf Fisho , , , , and like me, on a Budget.

From memory they are about the $150 mark and we got ours on a little special for $129

If you look around, they are popular and would be able to find them on special quite regularly.

There's a few options around that price, Bug showed one good example.
Like saph said, if you're still learning and going to do it the first time, get 'cheapie' combo til you get the hang of it and see if you like it, while saving some money to get better one in the future.
But, cheap is diff to diff people. Few people always say, spend as much as you can afford it, don't go mental, especially for first rod.
The first rod will be a good backup rod too.

I still have my first $90 rod, graphite composite fibreglass tip. Though I have a better lighter rod, I still use that rod as a spare, bigger fish, or lend to a mate.

There's a few at Anaconda. I'd say get 12ft to 14ft rod. The length provides longer casting distance and elevate the line higher in the air, avoiding the line getting washed and tumbled too much.

Go with Bugatti's recommendation you can't go wrong, the Penn spinfishers will last years and are built like tanks, full metal construction !
My preference is the 650 - 750 size but each to their own, wash it in fresh water after every trip and it will last years ! did I mention it will last years ?

Actually Hornet has a good point, yes , , , , the 650 - 750 are the better all round reels for general Surf Fishing. I fish reel heavy and line heavy , , , , and the 950 (as is the 850) is a heavy reel to lug for general fishing applications.

One line for all?
I'd put 20lb braid.

20lb so it's strong enough to pull a gummy against the wave, currents, etc.
Braid cos it's thin. Thin line means doesn't get washed and tumbled as much in comparison to thick mono.

If for gummy only, I'd put to 30lb braid.
Just salmon, I'd put 15 lb braid.

Some combos already got a line on the reel. Especially those entry level combos. Start with that before spending more.
Once you get the hang of it and liking it, then look for better rod reel and line as your second outfit.
