Surf Combo?

Post by GuppoJo » Sun Aug 25, 2019 8:48 pm

Hey all, just looking for a combo I'm looking to buy for the surf
I'm looking at buying a Daiwa seagate 6000 or a daiwa BG 6500 paired with either a storm gomoku 13ft or a daiwa Sandstorm rod.
I'm leaning more towards the Daiwa sandstorm rod but I am getting lost between the two reels. The BG is 200 bucks but seagate is 320 on sale and is magsealed. All help would be appreciated, cheers!

Thanks, it's for a mix of both, hoping to be able to cast slugs one day and just throw bait out the next. But I'm set on a graphite rod, fiberglass and a big reel is just way too heavy.

Hey mate, My brother just bought the storm gomoku with the red grips. Feels like a very nice rod.

With the reels.. They are both a nice reel and will do the job. The seagate will probably be a bit lighter but being magsealed you will have to send it back to Daiwa to get it serviced. The BG might be a touch heavier but you'll be able to service it yourself.

If i were you, I'd go the new Daiwa Tierra LT. The 6000 holds 300m of 30lb braid, has 12kgs of drag and weighs half of what the BG does in the same size.. and is $20 less.

Cheers, Anth

If you're to cast lures, get the lighter one. You'd be surprised how tiring it could be.

Casting slugs with that rod/reel will be a pain in the arse.

You’d be better to get a cheap glass stick and pair it with a fishwinch like a Spinfisher or a Slammer, and then get a dedicated spinning setup - a 9 foot graphite rod and a 4000 size reel.

I use a 9ft Samurai Ledge 8-15Ib rod with a BG3000 with 15Ib braid for spinning, perfect for our beaches, very light so I can cast all day without fatigue

Sorry but using a 13 foot rod to cast slugs is not a great idea. You will tire yourself out in no time..
You need 2 different combos for this, or use the 9 footer to baitfish if it's not too rough.

The daiwa BG is a great reel, the new daiwa eliminator is 99% a BG with just a few minor amendments. So that will also suffice.

Bear in mind a slightly heavier reel on a long 9 foot rod will not feel much heavier in comparison to a lighter reel on the same 9 foot rod. If you can trial them in shops then do that first and make a decision.

I have a combo very similar to that actually, BG 3000 and a 9ft Daiwa rod which is extremely light, I'm new to lure fishing so I wasnt sure what would be good for casting slugs. But I might get a BG 5000 or 6500 for bait fishing on a longer graphite rod, thanks for the help tho!
