Adding new (more) mono to a reel ?

Post by StarrangerAU » Fri Feb 15, 2019 7:37 am

Question folks....

What is the general opinion of adding new (or actually more) line to an existing spool? I have one particular reel that has had a number of bust offs over the past year and the quantity of line remaining on the spool is probably closer to half what it probably should be. Can I splice(?) a new line to the existing line an top it back up? ... this is your bog standard 8-10 lb mono.

The only two issues I can think is a) the splice knot may catch on the rod guides when casting , b) the knot becomes a weak point in the line and the next decent hook up will just bust off again.

I was hoping to avoid wasting 80-100 mtrs(?) of otherwise decent line that currently on the spool

Cheers.

Ofcourse you can.

Full blood knot for the join between the two lines.

My suggestion though is to use braid it is by far better than mono.

Usually I add the new line on the back of the spool.
Say the reel can fit 300m and you got 200m left of line. Take the 200m line out, put the new 100m line in first and put the old 200m back.
Therefore you still have 200m to cast, etc, before hitting the lines joint.

From my personal experience, I hardly get to cast and fight fish using over 150m of line.
And yes, braid as the backing makes more sense, since they are stronger and thinner, thin knot. Similar concept to fly fishing reel. About 100m of braid backing line then about 20-30 metres of fly line.

Joining lines is fine, use an Albright knot with ten turns, braid or mono.If adding mono to braid, use the braid
to do your turns,it,s easier.you can also do this to add mono or flurocarbon as a leader.
When you wind the joined line on,be careful to place the knot at the back lip of the spool.
This will eliminate the chance of the line catching on the knot when casting,if ever you get down to it.
Albright takes a little extra time but it,s very compact and smooth thru the runners.

Theres nothing more serious than line wastage. Id recommend a Bimini twist or a plait.

How much line does the reel normal hold?
If only 200mt put the longest length on top and use as a blood knot.

You could top off with braid and fit more line back on then that you had

Don't be tight.
Pull it all off and redo it

He mentioned a number of bust offs (I'm assuming the line has degraded)...I think the general consensus is that you should replace your line every 2 years. How much is a 100 meters of old mono worth anyway? Seriously, why would you bother? (the chain is only as good as its weakest link)
