Lures for trolling in Victorian waters?

Post by CremeDeLaCreme » Sun Aug 07, 2011 11:45 am

Hi all,

I want to start slow trolling in my boat with Lures in Western Port Bay and PPB?

What lures should I look at buying and what types of fish should I target trolling Vic waters?

Thanks in advance

for salmon, anything that shines will do. Hardbody lures diving down to 2 meters work great. SP up to 4 inches long works well.

Around January, hit the rip area in queenscliff. You will snag the biggest salmon in PPB on that area. Watch the boiling water. When the krills are thick, you will have a ball. Circle the boil. Dont cut over it unlike some charter operators and boaties. Or, stop and chuck your lures in the middle of the feeding frenzy.

Not sure about trolling for snapper. These are bottom feeders and you need to go deep to reach them. You will probably lose heaps of lures of you troll for snapper.

Barracotta - anything shiny will do. Hard body lures work too.

Snook/Pike - SP, hard body lures. Live bait is best. Try Brighton pier on a summer night. You will be surprised how big they are.

The simplest lure for salmon is a drinking straw on the line. Never tried it, but have heard of it being done.
