How to cast with a lure?

Post by rhys_p » Sun Sep 11, 2011 5:26 pm

Trying to get into lure fishing, picked up a few small rapala rainbow trout lures and from what i can gather using a sinker is frowned upon.

Im using an shakespeare ugly stik balance with sufix duraflex line (10.8kg) and i cant cast the thing more that 1 meter?

Is it ok to attach a sinker to get some distance or is there a technique to casting a small lure?

10.8kg sheesh that's heavier than what I use on my shark gear.

All you need for that sort of lure is a light rod about 1 to 3kg(or 3 to 5kg possibly a bit heavy though) some lightish line 3kg(braid also helps as it's thinner) and you should be ok to cast at least 20+ meters.

You didn't say what size rod you have and reel. If your flicking lures from a boat or in the river 7 ft is good and a small good quality spin reel. Definitely no lead and a bit of practise. Set up a bucket down the yard and try lobbing your lures into it. :fishing:

try lighter line.
few other things..
I switched from nylon to braid and I can cast twice the distance. never going back to nylon!
Also switched to lighter line and got my casting even further!
