Ultimate PPB Snapper Combo
Just interested in everyone's opinion on what the ultimate snapper combo would be for boat based Port Phillip Bay fishing...(rod, reel, line)

Re: Ultimate PPB Snapper Combo
Where abouts in PPB, some areas have some current and others have very little.
Bait vs Lures?
For me bait fishing southern PPB 5-7kg rod small overhead or 4000's reel Ci4 ect, spooled with 20lb braid.

Re: Ultimate PPB Snapper Combo
The logical all rounder imo would be a 4-8kg 7foot 1 piece, 4500 reel, 15lbs braid, 30lbs leader. It's what I run.Mattblack wrote:Just interested in everyone's opinion on what the ultimate snapper combo would be for boat based Port Phillip Bay fishing...(rod, reel, line)
This has no problems catching anything from squid and whiting to nice size gummies and snapper if played right. Heavy enough to tackle big nasty rays and skates, light enough to detect bites from anything.
Edit: mines for wpb. Maybe downsize a smidge on each for ppb.

Bait....and something that will handle the majority of the currents of the bay (light currents).frozenpod wrote:Where abouts in PPB, some areas have some current and others have very little.

My favourite is an 8kg graphite rod with a 4000 reel packed with 16lb mono, but I'm looking at adding to the collection and appreciate everyone's opinions.

Then the most expensive gear out there will be the ultimate.
You don't need an ultimate combo for snapper though.
Have been catching them for several years now on a $25 kmart combo.

Re: Ultimate PPB Snapper Combo
Not the ultimate by any stage, but i just bought 4 outfits for this exact purpose., each one being a 6"6 length 4-8kg graphite rod, 4000 sized shimano sienna and 30lb braid (ideally 15-20 is plenty but 30 was on special for $10 so i got that)
This would be plenty for snapper in PPB. all up cost me $75 per combo (45 for reel, 20 for rod and 10 for braid)
The bonus of the graphite rod is that they can double as a lure rod if the fish are actively taking lures. plus most defenitely be used as a whiting /squid/ pinkies rod as well. (it feels and looks like a 2-4kg rod)
The rod i have is from anaconda the mojiko one, it looks like a whiting rod, but initial load tests have shown a solid backbone with a soft tip. the 6"6 length is quite easier to work with on a small boat, specially when landing and trying to net the fish
My lure rod is a Daiwa 3-6kg graphite with Daiwa 2506 reel (3kg drag) with 13lb braid and 12lb leader. (ideally a 3000 sized reel would be better, but what i have will land them as well)
the latest tackleworld catalouge also has catana/sienna combo starting from $99 which would also be a great bang for buck option.
if you want to spend big, then buy the more expensive versions of similar sized gear.
graphite/braid combo will give you a nicer feel of the fish than glass/mono obviously which is where the price difference will also come into play.
if you want ultimate then
Nitro viper rod
Daiwa certate 3000/4000(H) / shimano twinpower 4000/5000
15lb braid (saltiga 12)

Re: Ultimate PPB Snapper Combo
When i first bought my boat, i went with;
Ugly Stick Med/4500 Siena/30lb Kato Mono - Served me really well.
As for what i think is ultimate;
Something from Daiwa Saltist Saltiga Range (can't remember the exact model, held one the other day, felt immaculate)/Daiwa BG/Saltiga12 Braid..
Nice 80cm leader, double 6/0 Owner Hooks, full whiting unweighted and wait to be woken up by sound of a drag workout.. woooohooooo, sorry got a little excited, cant wait to get back out there!
