Snapper/ pinky season

Post by Walker2795 » Tue Jan 09, 2018 9:11 pm

Hey Guys,

I have read a lot of this forum because I’m very new to Melbourne and I want to chase my first snapper. I don’t mind if I have to target pinkies any will do. I read that it currently isn’t snapper season but then I read somewhere else that they have a second run of snapper around this time of the year ? I also wanted to ask what rigs to use, are there any rigs you can buy already made up for beginners? I’m landbased and live along Hampton beach so having a look at the rock groynes and they always seem to have someone Fishing on them. Thanks in advance guys !

G'day, I would target Brighton pier, seems pinkies are common off that pier, and the larger ones from time to time, but you need to put in the time / hours.
He who has the most fishing rods WINS ! :ts:

Not much going on with snapper at the moment via boat or land based, average season. Few Pinkies around though. Rig depends on location, my preference is running sinker. If your wanting to buy premade Rigs just buy any paternoster rig recommended for pinky snapper. Brighton breakwall, Mordialloc Pier, You’ll have a change at most locations around there, more so at dawn/early morning and dusk/night id think

If get a few days of onshore winds, west or south west , you will get pinkie's from Brighton to Sandringham

Plenty of good spots around there. The rock groynes, Brighton pier, Sandringham rockwall , black rock all can produce pinkies. Good luck.

I love fishing for pinkies on light tackle using lures. My fav time of year is Autumn and early Winter. I fish from a boat but if i was land based I would prefer on shore winds...if you are bait fishing, rough weather and strong winds bring pinkies and snapper in close. I hear the jetty and car park at halfmoon bay can fish well....its all reef out there.

Thanks heaps guys! I’m going to give the rock groynes a good go first then will start to explore further away. As I don’t have a car yet.

So if you don’t have onshore winds, don’t even bother?
And is that the same with it being really calm? The pinkies and snapper hang out deeper ?

I have caught plenty of pinkies even on flat calm nights.
