I've fished there before, 2 best rig that worked for me was unweighted rig where you put bait on the hook and literally whip it out and let it sink, this only works if pumps not working. The other method is float rig where you stop the rig just before it hits the bottom, this works great when pumps on and only down side is you gotta constantly cast and retrieve once the lines drifted far and starts to swing inwards towards the rocks. I've caught more fish on the unweighted rig mainly bream and mullet. Goodluck mate

Hey guys,

Been fishing in Newport by the power station for snapper, Flathead, bream, silver trevally. Its deep, rocky with weeds.

Loosing a lot of tackles, rigs & lures. Currently, using Paternoster rig with curve hooks (Octopus size 1&2), not loosing as much but still loosing.

Does anybody has any suggestion??? Anything would help.

Have you tried using straight hooks?

Try to hide the hooks deep in your bait. Not ideal but will reduce the chance of getting snagged.

The pinkies shredding the baits and its mainly when retrieving.

Retrieve as fast as possible non stop with rod tip down and you'll see your sinker and bait/hook skipping on the surface, when close (about a rod length away), lift the rod up high and quick, keep winding if possible.
That does the trick for me.
Just becareful, that sinker and hook gonna fly towards you.
Had same problem on my first few attempts fishing on a rock years ago, took me a while to figure that out.
After a while, you'll get better with the timing and distance judgement.

Did you get snagged while retrieving?
Use teardrop sinker and use lighter line for the sinker. In case snagged, you only lose the sinker.
Cast far and retrieve fast, rod tip down, once close lift the rod up high and quick.

Thanks, I have been putting the sinker on a trace, retrieving fast but keeping the tip up.

What would be the length of the rig roughly from the float to the jig?

Been using both a 8fts and 10fts rod. would you go for notmal hooks or circle?

That whole area really bad mate? I’ve fished some seriously snaggy spots because I find the fish are always there but sometimes a small shift in position or a different angled cast has got me into some less snaggy spots.
