Hooks for pinkies

Post by eddyt » Tue Mar 26, 2019 8:25 am

What's the best hook type and size for targeting 30-40cm pinkies boat based in PPB?

Recently I've been dropping a lot of what I'm guessing are 35cm+ pinkies. I've been using normal 1/0 hooks with a light 2-4kg rod with braid, drag is loose enough for even the underside fish to run and I keep the tension constant. I fish holding the rod so maybe I'm striking too soon? Only ever seem to drop the bigger fish.

Is 4/0 too big for the just legal pinkies or should I go 2/0? Circle or octopus hook?

3/0-4/0 circle for half pillies but do not strike just let the rod load up with about a kilo of drag depending on line class
If fishing light about a 1/2kilo drag, free spooling does work but u just have to stop the run and let the rod load up

Yeah 3/0 or 4/0 should do for pinkies 35+cm. There are a lot of pinkies in the 15-25 cm atm though, so good chance you've been getting hits from them, pulling the bait but not the hook. You'll catch those micro pinkies using #2 or 1/0 with small bait.

The 3/0 black magic circles will hook up bigger ones and smaller ones easy. Dont go too loose with your drag especially with circle hooks. Some people go too loose cos they like the fight, but you wanna get a feed sometimes haha

just my opinion if your holding the rod 2/0 suicide with a fair drag on the reel tap, tap, strike set the hook

If your going to be holding the rod waiting for a bite definitely go with the suicides

Thanks guys, I just ordered some owner 4/0 circles and 3/0 mosquito hooks online. I'll run the circles on a rod in the rod holder and hold the rod with the 3/0.

The mosquito hooks look sort of like suicides or are they different?

It’s better to smaller with hooks. I got an 8.5 kilo one on 4/0 circle. If your losing pinkies your drag prob too loose man, they pretty hook themselves even with suicides.
