Snapper reel recommendations
Snapper reel recommendations
We purchased a boat earlier this year and my son and I have been enjoying catching squid and flathead. With snapper season approaching, it is time to invest in some snapper gear. I would appreciate peoples recommendations of suitable reels for PPB, particularly if a bait runner style of reel is necessary or advantageous. I would prefer a good quality robust reel, that is easy to maintain and reasonably prices as I need 4 of them. I am currently favouring the Shimano D 4000 baitrunner or Daiwa BG 4000.
Thanks

Re: Snapper reel recommendations
Can’t go wrong with the OC or D shimanos mate. Personally I’d go 6000’s but 4000’s will still work.

Hi Schwartzy
:welcome2:
I'm more of an overhead reel guy ABU 6500 more so preference not that they perform better.
But as far as Baitrunners, for Snapper, they aren't necessary but as with me, if you prefer them and are use to them by all means. My kids (outside of using ABU 6500s) I have set up with Penn 5000 spin reels. They do the trick , , , , I like to fish heavy so would have preferred to set them up with 6000 spin reels but the Penn 5000 were at a good price at the time and light enough for my 10 year old.
Many use 4000, but like I said, I fish heavy and if robust is you pref , , , , go the 5000, even 6000
Cheers, Bug

Re: Snapper reel recommendations
Welcome and congrats for the purchase of the boat.
Like they said, no need for baitrunner.
How much are you willing to spend? You can go as low as sienna/sedonna or as high as stella.
Penn spinfisher 450 is not too bad, tough, but heavy.
Stradic 4000 with 20 lb line will do good too.

Re: Snapper reel recommendations
I'm with Yepi'mon....the Baitrunner OC 6000 is my pick of the bunch, great for both WPB and PPB. (would also suggest mono line & a fibreglass rod if your fishing from a boat)

Re: Snapper reel recommendations
Most of my snapper boat reels are in the 4000 size range spooled with 20 lb line. Find it works just fine for me

Re: Snapper reel recommendations
Kids & multiple lines in the water are a recipe for disaster...braid is a bastard to untangle & is also harder to try knots if your just starting out. Fibreglass rods are more robust and baitrunners make setting the correct drag pressures a breeze.
For bait fishing, my favourite snapper combo is the 6-10kg/7ft Ugly Stik with a Shimano Baitrunner OC 6000 with 20lb Maxima mono.
