If you’ve only just started fishing I think you’re mad to drop $300 on a reel.

Buy a $40 sienna and an $80-100 rod. Spoil it with light braid and go do some fishing. After a few months and no doubt some screwups drop the coin on something nice.

Haven’t felt the rod. But it will be fine for a start.

I would also visit a fishing tackle store, not anaconda or bcf for some advice
Anaconda or bcf are ok if u known what you want

Yeah get a graphite combo from anaconda, great value, dont need to spend that much especially if you're new to the salt

I know this is an old thread, but i totally agree with this.

The majority of my rods have a simple Shimano Hyperloop, either 2500 or 4000. I only have a couple of rods which have 4000 Baitrunners on them. I find that for bread and butter fish like Whiting, Flathead and Squid the old Hyperloop works great. Big Snapper, Kingfish and Tuna are a different story, but most people dont target them.

Too many people are obsessed with gear. Most of my hobbies can get quite expensive.. im also into photography for example. In that field so many people go out and buy the most expensive camera body they can afford with no idea how to use it and not understanding that they could get the same results with a camera 1/4 the price. Or they spend all their time on the internet researching, instead of getting out their and learning with what they have.

This is true.

It's the trend nowadays too though, and with information everywhere in consumerism cultural build that more is better.

Though, it isn't wrong to buy what you can afford, it creates the image / concern that to get the best I must buy the best (often marketed as the most expensive too), "its good for business".

Read this somewhere: currently a lot of people are buying items they dont need, with the money they dont have, to impress other people they dont know.

If they can afford it and make them happy, sure, but if not, they're in deep trouble like debts and stuff.
Isn't afterpay is like one of the highest in Aus now. Something like that.
