Garfish off a boat

Post by purple5ive » Thu Oct 19, 2017 1:00 pm

Guys,
Just wondering where a good place to start looking around the frankston/mornington areas for some gars.
Been quite a while since I caught some, wouldn’t mind targeting a few for the table and for a bit of bait soon.
I know how to target them, but not so sure about areas where they can be targeted specifically from a boat. I reckon my dad and cousin will have a bit of fun catching them
cheers

I have found them over grassy areas around 10 to 15 feet depth , if they're around it won't take them long to hone in on the burley.

They turn up at Frankston pier consistantly so they must be around. I have never targetted them directly, but there were huge schools of them in our berley trail last weekend, I was spewing I didnt have my gar gear on board.was out in 14mtrs off Carrum

Nice. Yeah always pays to have a spare outfit on hand. But in small boats its a hard ask.
I will try around there soon when I'm chasing the snapper. Will be a good time pass while waiting

I used to use my stradic etc. But I have since found my best gar combo is a $10 Big W combo, approx 6.5", with a small reel with mono all the way thru. Its bendy like a noodle, which doubled my catch rate when I started using it. (the extra bend stopped me pulling hooks on the strike) If I get a tangle, I slide the float along a bit, tie on a new hook, and some split shot and keep fishing. So much easier than fluro tied to braid, etc.

The main reason I had no gear on the boat was I had just had it serviced and had pulled out all my gear and hadnt put back in floats, etc. Could probably have made it work on snapper combos if I had the terminal tackle.

Seriously if you havent got a cheap and nasty gar combo permanently rigged up with a sliding float, ur missing out, I freaking love that combo, it has caught hundreds of fish (which my GF LOVES for dinner) I highly recommend, best ten bucks I have ever spent.

Yeah, we dont have a big boat either, but its a 5.3 mtr quintrex, so usually have a few extras just in case.
