Paternoster V something a bit more simple

Post by Kestrel » Thu Jan 03, 2019 10:32 am

Hi folks

A few days ago I put up a post about paternoster rigs.

I'm wondering whether simply attaching two hooks to the main line at say 30cm intervals with a sinker at the bottom would produce the same effect as the paternoster, but easier to rig and fewer angles probably.

Your thoughts?

I run straight fluro mono on my small reels, so no need to tie the leader on .
First I tie the hook on main line ,snell the hook and then after the hook I do a loop about 40cm up line and on that loop attach sinker...

for my whiting paternoster rig is stupidly simple -- with ether straight mono or some leader already connected to your braid - tie one surgeons loop at the end -- then another surgeons loop about 30 cm up then a third surgeons loop another 30 - 40 cm up - basic rig complete

now loop a sinker on the bottom loop ( can be changed for the tide flow ) and then the hooks tie them to a short leader with a surgeons loop on the end ( you can make some spares as well ) now lock the loops together for your short leaders onto the 2 upper loops on the basic rig

if a toad or leather jack take your hook they are quick to replace - all the better if you have a hot bite going and LJs have stollen your hooks - if the tide slows or speeds up the sinker is quick to replace and the short leaders can be thicker to last better with LJs

you could almost tie this rig with your eyes closed

Simply put NO.
I would recommend learning if not already the dropper loop. For frogs and wting hooks to mainline will work and possibly the odd snapper when you've hit a hot spot but you'll do much better with pn rig. You can also just do a single hook with 1m of line to swivel with running weight above swivel. Bait presentation is very important for the larger fish. Just my two sense.
good fishing

With your current catch rate I mite downgrade to 1 hook and try your style of rig and see if it increases my strike rate

If your main issue is tangles, a twisted dropper rig is good for reducing them. The droppers come off the main line at a 90 degree angle which reduces tangles greatly however they take a little more effort to tie. Nowadays I pre tie my rigs with a swivel at the top, put them in zip lock bags then when fishing take them out, tie on to the top swivel and clip a sinker on the bottom clip of the rig.
