Portland tuna report 09/07/16

Post by ChrisAbout » Sun Jul 10, 2016 4:27 am

Picked up crew at 12am and after several stopovers we were in Portland at 5am. We hit the water at 7am and headed out towards Cape Nelson looking for bird activity. By 8.30am we had reached cape bridgewater and bird activity was picking up. We then noticed tuna busting the surface and the hunt was on. Skirts, divers and a teaser were deployed.
Working the 60-100m lines, we had 8x 15-20kg fish by 12.30pm. We then fished one more hour, caught 5 more, but they were released.

Running out of cold ice and space to store so much fish, we sped off to the ramp, re-freshed the ice and headed home.

Awesome experience and pretty cheap too (when you share costs between 4). Will do it again very very soon for sure.

Awesome work! Id love to give Portland a crack in our own boat, but being only a 4.55mtr quintrex, I dont like my chances! You'll be eating fresh sashimi like a king!
