portland 3rd 4th
Drove to portland wed left about 3am got there about 730 dropped into the tackleshop for some reports he said schoolies to the right of the rock barrels straight out.we launched and headed out with light winds about 10 knots as we got to the rock the swell was huge but not breaking we decided to head straight out to the shelf the conditions were only going to get better.
We got to the shelf about 930 put out the outriggers and put out our spread we had 6 rods out 5 with skirts and 1 x rap 30. We trolled all the way to the horse shoe trolled around there for a bit for nothing . There was plenty of bird activity but they were feeding on krill big red patches of it. We decide to bring everything in and high tail it to cape nelson. On arrival we put the spread out and start trolling as we were trolling in 70mt towards portland all of a sudden to our right a whale blows and breaches we turned to try and get a photo but it was swimming faster than our trolling speed and we lost sight. By 430 we gave it away and headed back to portland beaten we covered 170km for nothing.
When we got to the ramp our other mate had arrived and had a cold beer for us there was not many fish being cleaned. We went to check in the caravan park the cabin was fantastic new stylish even had foxtel I highly recommend portland bay caravan park after dinner at the pub home for a few red wines and discuss tactics for tomorrow.
We launched around 715 and headed out we were right behind reel time charters we decided to base our decision on which way matt cini went. He went straight out to the 70 mt mark and started trolling so we dropped our riggers and did the same heading towards cape nelson the conditions were perfect swell about 1.5 mt wind around 6 knots we trolled for an hour every time we came across bait it was deep all of a sudden the x rap 40 I had put out was hit lucky for me I was standing right next to it so I grabbed it and the tuna went on a howling first run but it was soon along side the boat and promptly gaffed.
We reset the spread and continued trolling hoping for more but it wasn't to be for at least 2 hours when bang the shotgun went off a small jet head lumo skirt a smaller fish but we would take any at this time at 230 it was rods in dash back to portland clean the fish clean the boat and get ready for the drive home I arrived at my place around 10pm looking forward to the next trip. when we cleaned our fish matt cini was on the next table he made comment that it was tough today which made us feel better.one of the pictures is the view out the back as we were at full noise on the way home in portland bay a great run home.
