usually though i find if the whole screen is red (from surface to bottom) it isnt bait.
For example if a ship passes by and you cross its wake, because of all the turbulence and air bubbles in the water the screen just shows clutter.
Also it has happened going through the heads.
Wolly, did you muck around with the sensitivity on your sounder as you went through it?

I think you were right the first time Wooly - it probably was a kelp forest.
I remember my first time at Port Mac back in the late 90's and being really impressed with this massive kelp forest 'wall' that we found in 20-30 meters of water a number of kilometres offshore. The fronds extended to the surface. At first, it looked like a massive drift line of dead kelp floating on the surface, but we could see dozens and dozens of the fronds extending right to the sea floor. I would have loved to have the scuba gear with me at the time, but I've never been organised enough to get back there for a look underwater. The only other place I know of that has these kinds of forests are Tasmania, although there are probably other places I don't know about.
