Is it worth fishing soft plastics at night?

Post by LINwAd » Sat Feb 18, 2017 2:08 pm

Hey guys,

Has anyone had any success in using softplastics at night off the Piers?

Was thinking to give it a crack, but would love some input or ideas on viability.

Cheers

Try large white SP'S around the lights of piers and bridges. Especially in the sandy patches amongst the weeds in the shallows. Flatties will go them and in the right locations an sneaky jew is not unheard of.

Plastics work at night mate. Don't worry about needing glow or anything. I'd be more inclined to use a ribbed plastic at nights though.

Sexual inyourendo was unintended, then I proof read.. haha

I only fish lures and I only fish at night due to family commitments. Hards, softs they all work - fish have no problems finding your lure at night. I've fished like this for 3 or 4 years. My tips are:

fish the bottom
fish larger plastics - I like 6" gulp sandworms at night
black or dark lures (these give the strongest silhouette)
Cheap eBay blades work great and don't break the bank
Scent if it makes you feel confident

Fish close to structure, casting in the dark is hard at first so I like places I can just drop the lure down and bring it alongside the structure I'm standing on (piers are perfect for this).

A lot of fish at night will be relating to the bottom and to structure. Dragging and grubbing your sp along the bottom usually pays off.

I've had fish pick up an sp that's been stationary for 10-15 seconds between 6" drags plenty of times - don't think because it's night you need to go all crazy whipping things around so the fish can sense your lure - they do just fine finding and eating a non-vibrating subtlety worked sp.

Oh ... and the most important thing I forgot :)

As it's dark you can't rely on seeing 'tics' in your line to indicate bites so you have to do a lot by feel. I find it more effective to switch up to tight (or at least tighter) line techniques and take as much slack out of your system as you can. I do this in a couple of ways:

Dragging and grubbing the plastic
Instead of hopping with the rod I use the reel - a quick wind or two with the rod tip raised will lift the lure off the bottom and then it will fall on a taut line back down and I'm more likely to feel the donk if it gets taken. If you hop it with the rod the. there's too much of a belly in the line and that slack will rob you of feeling what is happening to the lure.
