The rod does not matter but it helps make you look good and professional. Dougiek was using 15 foot surf rod casting 2.0 jig to catch his bait. He looked like a lunatic but he got what he was after.

Use jig head weight suitable for the conditions. I use 1/8 but mostly 1/4 oz size 1/0 or 2/0 hook. If you want distance, use heavy jig. If you want finesse use light jig. For deeper water, use heavy jig. If you use light jig in deep waters and cast it on Monday, it will be Friday before it hits the bottom.

Last but not the least, you will not catch what is not around. Understand your target and you will find them.

1 use a 1-3kg rod and light line
what size jigheads, plastics and line are you using?

mornington pier generally has some flathead, pinkies or red mullet hanging around there. the tide doesnt run too hard there. go to the end of the pier and cast straight out, im sure you should be able to catch something, the first fish is always the hardest, it gets easier from there
this is very true, keep trying mate

HeHe....that's not exactly true mate. The wrong rod will make hard work of it for sure.

Watch youtube mate, it'll teach you as much as it can short of putting in the hours.

If you're not fishing sunrise/sunset your chances will go down substantially.
