Sugarloaf Reservoir 24/1

Went lure fishing between 5 and 630pm today, casting lures from the bank for yellow belly and red fin, using a pink Tassie devil, silver and gold hogbacks, zman 2 inch grub, and Aussie spinner in 3/4 ounce purple and black. Lost 5 lures, which is a new record for me in the time, and only saw tiny bait fish.

I was there last week, couldn't tempt them with any lures.

I could see them jumping which made it more frustrating

A word of warning, Wikipedia tells me that the Mercury levels in fish from sugarloaf reservoir are mot safe for human consumption. Don't know why.

Tough spot to fish with lures. If you go again try hanging around until just on dusk. The gates close but will open automatically if you approach them in your car.

I think I was near the ridge picnic area.

No one else fishing there that day, but I could see signs of previous visitors... empty cans, fishing line, tree branches made into rod holders, and even a deceased tassie devil lure.

Of other interest, the toilet block is where they filmed that infamous toilet scene in trainspotting.

Yeah, good call. To be honest, I was pretty tired at that point and needed to head home to set up the next days camping adventure.

That's a little surprising, especially considering it supplies Melbournians with drinking water.

Sugarloaf has been fishing pretty poorly recently, well for me and a mate anyway.
You need to hike a bit for the better areas.

I wouldn't be too concerned about the mercury unless you plan on taking a feed regularly.

yep, that bay and the one either side are solid lure graveyards. lots of timber for the unwary lure angler.

there are fish there and they seem to move up the water column on dusk. they seem to be staying on the "down low" during the bright part of a hot day. lots of foot traffic, noise, vibrations, during the day is another factor in pushing them down.
