They can get water into eppalock from eildon via the waranga western channel & into the goldfields superpipe.

GMW are on a hiding to nothing with eppalock. In 2010 after rains in september filled it they were criticised for not releasing enough water as follow up rain in november caused it to spill flooding places along the campaspe like rochester causing 10's of millions of $$ worth of damage & lots of law suits. They have got to leave room for future rain, holding it too high doesn't give them any means to control it.Once it spills they have no control. The other problem is the outfall can only deliver 1000 meg a day downstream.

I'm sure it would be lovely to have it nice & full for summer for fishing, skiing & boating but without a crystal ball to know what future rains will be they have to "risk manage" it.

Carn mate, you can't really expect people to believe that dropping the lake below 50% is due to risk management? 80-85% sure, but 43%? There is money to be made from water, and that's exactly what's going on. The stuff that falls out of the sky for free, is getting sold off!

There is 4/5th's of f all left of the campaspe irrigation system,it's virtually de commissioned so they really only have stock & domestic & urban water authorities to sell it to.The gov't bought back 95% of the high security water entitlements as part of the mdb plan so i'm not sure who they are selling it too.

It is a very expensive asset to maintain, just sitting there, generating them virtually no income at all and the cost of this is being passed on to irrigators in other gmw systems.

Correct! And if it wasn't for the irrigation system required...I'm guessing there would be no Eppalock or Eildon for us to fish in! Just have to take it as it comes...water will go to where it is needed for agriculture. Also, there have been environmental flows released from Eppalock, similar to the Goulburn releases back in spring. Increasing flows to simulate rain events to trigger native fish spawning was the aim of these releases and also benefit other rivers downstream of course.
cheers
