Why do some people put mono on their spool before braid?

I don't like tape purely for the reason of it leaving residue on the spool. Couple of cranks of mono to give the braid something to bite on then full (shallow) spool of braid is the way I spool

I used to use mono as backing but one time a fish took all the braid and half the mono I spent ages getting the braid back on the reel all the while thinking I hope the joining knots hold they did but I gave the mono away after that

I'm a bit confused by this post.

So you had a spool of braid (150m for the sake of the argument) and say 20m of mono. The fish ran 160m and took the whole spool of braid and it ran into the mono and you fought it back to the boat?

If so having the mono was the difference between getting it to the boat and it pinging off leaving you spooled.

Or do you mean you don't build up the reel at all. You spool it to full capacity with braid?

The other reason why people put mono on before braid is because historically braid has been more expensive so you can topshot with mono to reduce the cost. Probably with the popularity now it is still more expensive than low stretch mono. I remember when the original powerpro came out and it was 90 bucks for 300 metres.
