Just a quick heads up on a new video I put together for anyone who is keen on learning how to set-up a garfish float rig.

Thanks Beno,

is there any reason you only use 1 hook instead of 2 like a paternoster style Gar rig?

Thanks guys, I sometimes use double hooks but was showing it the easiest way possible for beginners. I also find it tangles more often with paternoster style.

Hi Beno,

I enjoyed your video, this is basically a standard coarse-fish set-up. A few questions/suggestions:

The small rubber rings to keep the float upright can be replaced with small shot either side of the float.

I have never seen anyone use so much pressure just to apply shot to mono, I simply use my fingers to pinch them on and rarely have any come off (it's easy to know as the float will sit higher). Do you ever re-use the shot or are they discarded? By using your fingers the shot will come off using either your thumb-nail or by inserting a knife into the slit. I doubt I'd be able to reuse the shot you've used in the film. This has the added bonus of being able to adjust fully your depth, even to within a few cm of the float.

I use the nail clippers that come in Christmas crackers or from the chemist instead of scissors - cheaper, smaller and can be tied to a jacket for ease of use.

Finally, surely the mono you've used there for gar is overkill? The most I've used for gar is 2lb bull, max 4lb if there are other species hanging around.

Many thanks.
There is no such thing as a stupid question, only a stupid answer.

Keeps the float at the right level. This can depend though on what type of float you are using you may have to use more or less shots....

Time poor, thanks glad you like the vid.

Now with the shots to mono question I just find its easier to crimp them on with pliers, I have had them come off numerous times when crimping on with fingers.... maybe I dont have a strong enough grip? lol.

I dont find 8 pound lo stretch platypus mono to be over kill, after all it has a thinner diameter than most monos. You have to remember I don't just use my rods just for gars but whiting and snapper too..... :victory:

I see. So, if using one heavier sinker will do the same trick as well?
Anyway, thanks for your time and really like your attitude.
