Catching minnows for bait.

Post by reillypitts » Fri Oct 30, 2015 2:25 pm

Does anyone have any experience in catching galaxias and other small fish for bait and how to go about the rig and putting them on a hook?

Cheers.

It's as simple as using a $4 bait trap from K-mart and putting a tin of cat food inside it, as for baiting them, they can be used on any rig you would normally use for fishing

Galaxids are native - they are already struggling against all the exotics in our waterways, and several species are endangered or even critically endangered. Why would you want to use them as bait?

Normally live baits i use a single hook and pin it just behind its head. Go through its shoulder and it should swim fine.
Use a bait trap as mentioned earlier.

There is nothing wrong with using them for bait as long as you use them in the same waterway that you got them and besides they are dynamite bait. Go to the Crater lakes in Camperdown, there is no shortage of them in there, looks like the same old natives argument again, a few minnows for bait is not going to have much of an effect, let the boy go get some and maybe even increase his chances of catching a fish

I agree with the bait trap but use bread crumbs as using car food is illegal. As far as baiting goes just put the hook through the top of it's mouth between the eyes and nose it will be in shock but stay alive and swim a lot longer
If I'm not fishing, I'd rather be fishing!

Maybe because of the chance of catching the protected catfish ;-) cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Thanks guys appreciate it, and broomstick I was just wondering because I've heard lots of other people catching good fish with them, so thought theyd be okay to use.
