How did you learn to use a bait cast reel?
Hey gents,
Recently purchased a new bait cast outfit for the Murray to target cod.
Never used a bait cast reel before - any tips?

turn on all the brakes. tighten friction knob until the lure just starts to drop. you can back the brakes off over time as your thumb learns to do a good job. smooth casts are easier to control. i used mono for the first week because it was cheap. heavy braid is also good b/c a backlash doesn't kink it up to hell like mono. i've moved to nicer braid now on one reel. the other one is a bit more finnicky with brakes still.

How did I learn? Terribly, lol, cheers davo
It's an exhilarating feeling catching a fish
But it's an even better feeling releasing them

Casting plug is a good tool to practice with..
When I first got mine I just loosened the brakes.. and in my room I kept flinging a lure with no hooks into floor hard.. to practice removing bird nests once that was down pat I moved outside and practice throwing into an esky, side arm throw out a wallet under ur armpit n keep it there during the cast..
Nowadays I over arm throw and brakes are very loose as my thumb does the braking.. bastards to learn but great to use once u know how to

If I'm not fishing, I'd rather be fishing!

Cast 1/2oz sinkers in the local footy oval. I don't run any brakes and have a very loose friction knob on my baitcaster

First started fishing when I was 5 and not long after that was using an abu 6500. I started by always keeping my thumb on the spool. I know the cast wont be of any distance but with each cast just back your thumb off the spool a little more to get the feeling of how the spool spins and when to slow it down. You will save yourself a lot of birds nests.
After you get the feel of it cast harder and harder with less thumb on the spool each time.
Good luck with it mate.

I watched gong lei YouTube videos and drooled.
In reality I took a sinker to a small lake and cast into it twice. This is a reminder I need to start doing it again. Still hopeless.

If you set the reel up correctly and take things nice and easy you should have no problems. The new mag braking system on a lot of the better reels make them very easy to use.
